A team of seven Landmarc employees, took on the Jurassic task of organising and taking part in a beach clean combing two miles of the MoD’s Lulworth coastline, which is also used by the general public.
Over a period of three days, the group managed to clear around 200 bags of rubbish, with 60 bags coming from Worbarrow Bay alone. Around 90 per cent comprised plastic drink bottles and discarded fishing lines, which do not bio-degrade and are a danger to marine life and beach environments.
Tom Theed, Landmarc’s Rural Manager in the South West region, said:
“These ranges lie within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and form six miles of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
“We therefore aim to carry out a number of beach cleans throughout the year, to help protect and conserve the habitats and the species that they support. We have also found that a clean beach discourages more littering, as people tend to be much more careless with their litter on a dirty beach.
“These events are an important way of caring for our valuable coastline, so a big thank you to the team for a job well done.”
