LIFE AFTER SERVICE, VETERANS THRIVING AT LANDMARC

In the lead up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday, we are showcasing a number of employees who represent Armed Forces communities from Reserves, veterans, service spouses and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. Next up are veterans Andy Nicol Technical Support Manager and Lee Randall Training Area Operative.

At Landmarc, supporting the Armed Forces community is more than just a commitment, it is a shared experience. For veterans like Andy Nicol and Lee Randall, their military backgrounds continue to shape their professional lives, bringing unique skills, perspectives, and values that enrich the entire organisation.

FROM WARSHIPS TO WORKSITES: ANDY NICOL’S STORY

“My journey began early and was inspired by my time in the Sea Cadets in King’s Lynn. My passion for engineering led me to the Royal Navy at just 16. I left school on a Thursday and by Sunday I was starting basic training at HMS Raleigh.

“I spent 14 years as a mechanical engineer in the Navy, honing technical skills and developing a strong sense of leadership and camaraderie. Serving on a ship, everyone becomes your military family. That deep-rooted teamwork is something I bring with me to work every day.

“While transitioning to civilian life, I found that my military training and discipline were highly valued, but were not always well understood. I had to explain a lot of the training on my CV, many civilians didn’t realise the extent of professional development we go through.

“Nevertheless, I took proactive steps, attending CV workshops and tailoring each application with precision, ultimately leading me to my current role as Regional Technical Support Manager in the East.

“Though still in my first year at Landmarc, I feel welcomed and supported, especially through initiatives like volunteering days. My military background continues to serve me well. I’m committed to staying current in my field and always bring fresh ideas, strong communication and problem-solving to the table.”

RESILIENCE AND PURPOSE: LEE RANDALL’S JOURNEY

“For me the military wasn’t just a job, it was a calling. I joined the Army Cadet Force at 14 and never looked back. As a Royal Marine for 14 years, I served in four different units and completed five operational tours as a weapons specialist, eventually instructing new recruits. I learned that humour in adversity and staying calm under pressure are invaluable; looking around at your mates during tough times and finding a way to laugh together, that’s something you carry for life.

“Transitioning to civilian life was a bumpy road, I was constantly chasing the same camaraderie and purpose I had in the military but that all changed when I joined Landmarc.

“The working environment here is the closest I’ve found to military life; fair, supportive and focused on shared goals. Working as a Training Area Operative at Straight Point Range in the South West, I find my previous experience gives me an edge. As a former weapons specialist, I understand our customers because I have been in their boots. Sometimes I can anticipate what they need before they ask.

“I’m really proud to have recently secured a Project Manager role; it’s an exciting next step in my Landmarc journey. To anyone leaving the military, Landmarc is worth exploring. With the right attitude, you’ll find opportunity and support here.”

VETERANS SUPPORTING VETERANS

Both Andy and Lee agree that Landmarc’s support for the Armed Forces community is genuine and effective. Through our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, veterans are not just welcomed, they are empowered. Whether it’s creating opportunities for development, respecting military skills or offering a culture built on trust and teamwork, Landmarc stands out.

Veterans at Landmarc don’t just fill roles, they lead with resilience, adaptability and a commitment to service that doesn’t end with military retirement.

As Lee puts it: “Transitioning is tough but with the right employer, it doesn’t have to be a struggle. Landmarc gets it. And that makes all the difference.”
