HAVING A CLEAR MISSION GIVES US A FOCUS

OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE INTEGRATED SUPPORT SERVICES AND FUNCTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS THE UK DEFENCE TRAINING ESTATE AND PROMOTE THE DELIVERY OF SAFE, SUSTAINABLE AND EFFECTIVE MILITARY TRAINING. MILITARY VETERAN TERRY SANDERSON, TEAM MANAGER AT BRUNSWICK IN THE SOUTH EAST, WHO TELLS US WHAT OUR MISSION MEANS TO HIM.

“I first joined Landmarc in the summer of 2010 as the Range Supervisor at Pirbright Ranges, a role I held for four years before progressing to Range Manager and then Team Manager for the past two years.

“Having a clear mission is important because it gives me and my team a clear focus on what we need to achieve at work to ensure we deliver the right services across the training estate. I am fully committed to my role and understand how the successful delivery of our company values will help us to support each other and provide a better service to our customer.

“Our mission is to work together to ensure we provide a safe, sustainable and serviceable environment to operate military training facilities across the UK Defence Training Estate for our customer, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and to offer any further support where needed.

“As Team Manager for this area, I manage 41 staff and it comes with its daily challenges. I find the best approach is to split my tasks into three key areas:

  • The HR responsibility, which in itself is a steep daily learning curve for any manager, covering the full range of our ABC policies. This involves routinely using HRMS to manage sickness, holiday and face to face interviews, for example benchMARC performance development reviews.
  • Planning and organising internal and external training to ensure all my staff and others are kept safe and are qualified to fulfil their various roles across our sites.
  • Management of the Maintenance Management System (MMS) covering all departments of the business.

“By motivating and leading my team to deliver the contract safely and efficiently, I can play an important part in delivering the mission. Ensuring they have all the training and equipment to do this, including the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), is a crucial part of my role, along with fulfilling any other needs at work such as looking out for their wellbeing and keeping morale high.

“Coming from an ex-military background enables me to fully understand our client’s training needs and aims for live firing and dry training, and what support and standards they should expect from Landmarc. I am also able to pass this understanding onto my fellow colleagues and advise other employees and contractors who have not worked or served with the military.

“To help guide my team to achieve our mission, I encourage them all to consider and review how they work within their areas of the estate and how their role plays an essential part. We discuss ways of making improvements if needed by actively encourage our employees to get involved with our suggestion scheme and submit Bright ideas.

“Recognising the company mission is important: it helps us to maintain our focus, energy, and attention on the end goal.”
