WOMEN IN DEFENCE – FUEL, VEHICLES, PLANT AND MACHINERY – IT’S ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR SITE OPERATIVE MAIR WARRILOW

Mair Warrilow has been with Landmarc since August 2009, starting out as a Service Administrator at Sennybridge in Wales and West before moving to her current role as Site Operative at the start of the NTEP contract, looking after all aspects of fuel, plant and machinery and vehicles.

“My role involves the day to day management of fuel, plant and machinery and vehicles in the Wales and West region. My job title may be Site Operative but I am a woman with many different hats! I am the Fuel and Lubricants Manager for Sennybridge and the Fuels,Lubricants and Industrial Gases (FLIG) accountant for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), which basically means I am the central point of contact for fuels used across the estate.

“I liaise daily with DIO staff on all fuel and vehicle aspects and collate all the information for their annual fuel consumptions so that they can submit to Defence Fuels, in order to identify the requirements for the following financial years.

“I order fuels via different systems such as the Ground Fuels Management System and the Management of the Joint Deployed Inventory system (MJDI), predominately for Wales and West region but also for other sites such as Otterburn, Wyke Regis, Warcop, Kirkudbright, Castlemartin, Swynnerton and Nesscliff.

“Fuel is not my whole job though, I also look after the daily management of both the Landmarc and DIO vehicle fleet and the plant and machinery including servicing, repairs, MOTs, processing accidents, breakdowns and gathering information as well as producing end of month submissions to the Utilities Management Bureau for collation of electricity, water meter readings and fuel consumptions.

Enhancing my knowledge

“Every day at Landmarc is different so there is never a dull moment! I never know what the day is going to bring, which can be challenging, but also makes my role more interesting. I really enjoy the close liaison with DIO, other military units and Landmarc staff and get to meet various people on a daily basis. My colleagues are fantastic and we’ve built up a good rapport.

“Landmarc has allowed me to enhance my knowledge base to ensure I go above and beyond what is expected of me. The most rewarding aspect of my job was being nominated by DIO HQ in Warminster to become their FLIG accountant and central point of contact for fuels.

Being a women in defence is very rewarding

“Landmarc are a very good employer. They understand their employee’s needs and work with them to achieve their goals. I was involved with fleet and fuel management prior to joining the company but on a much smaller scale for a civilian company.  Over the years with Landmarc I have attended many courses such as Motor Transport Supervisor, MJDI, and Fuels & Lubricants Manager – their skills matrix is excellent.
“To be a woman in defence is very rewarding as it gives me great job satisfaction that I can go above and beyond in helping our Armed Forces to be who they are today”.
